updated June 09, 2025
Renee Miller and Tim Beissinger, the duo behind @ThruHikers on TikTok, embarked on a remarkable 2,700-mile journey through the Pacific Northwest in 2022. The Pacific Northwest Circuit (PNC) combined hiking and canoeing, and they shared their experiences with over two million followers.
Their TikTok videos covered everything from meal planning to managing personal needs on the trail. One especially popular video detailed the changes their bodies underwent after months of intense physical activity. The couple’s transparency about their physical and mental health resonated with viewers, generating over seven million views.

Miller told news outlets that many viewers asked about weight loss. She said that they realized their bodies were changing in more ways than just that.
The PNC route began with a 1,600-mile hike across Washington State and into Canada, averaging 20 miles per day. Following that, they canoed approximately 1,200 miles along the Columbia River to the Pacific Ocean, averaging 35 miles per day.
Beissinger said that documenting their daily caloric intake was also a popular topic on TikTok. He estimated consuming around 4,000 calories daily to sustain their energy levels. Initially, they struggled to eat enough, but after two months, they were constantly hungry.
The couple reported several physical changes, including flattened feet (increasing their shoe size), tans despite sunscreen use, cuts and bruises from bushwhacking, and blisters that turned into calluses. They also lost body fat and gained muscle, particularly in their legs during the hiking phase and in their arms during the canoeing phase.

“It was more than just weight loss. Our bodies were changing.”
Beissinger recalled being surprised by the sudden muscle growth in his arms after a week of paddling. He said he felt like a muscle man.
