Pogacar Claims Criterium du Dauphine Title, Martinez Wins Final Stage

Tadej Pogacar of Slovenia secured his first Criterium du Dauphine title, finishing third in Sunday’s final stage. This victory enhances his role as a top contender for the upcoming Tour de France.Pogacar, the reigning Tour de France adn road world champion, entered the final day with a 1 minute, 1 second lead over Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark, thanks to consecutive stage wins earlier in the week.
Riding for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, Pogacar navigated the 82.8-mile stage from Val-d’Arc to the Plateau du Mont-Cenis, finishing alongside Vingegaard. Lenny Martinez of France won the stage, crossing the finish line 34 seconds ahead of the pair.
“It’s been a really amazing week,” Pogacar said, after securing his 99th professional win across stages, races, and general classification leads. He holds the most wins among active riders. ”Once again today, the team did a great job. We managed to defend the jersey and we can go home happy and prepare for the Tour de France.”
Pogacar topped the overall standings by 58 seconds. At 26, he is only the third reigning world champion to win the race, following French cyclists Louison Bobet (1955) and Bernard hinault (1981).
Florian Lipowitz of Germany finished third followed by Remco Evenepoel of Belgium.
Martinez, 21, overtook Spain’s Enric mas with about 5 miles remaining in the mountainous stage. This win adds to Martinez’s victories in the Tour de Romandie and Paris-Nice earlier this year.

Attention now turns to the tour de france, which begins Saturday, july 5. Pogacar said he plans to rest and focus on time-trial training before the Tour.
