Tadej Pogacar of UAE Team Emirates secured victory in the opening stage of the critérium du Dauphiné, outmaneuvering mathieu van der Poel in the final meters. The Critérium du Dauphiné stage win places Pogacar in the yellow jersey, signaling his strong form ahead of the Tour de France.
Jonas Vingegaard finished second, followed by Van der Poel and Remco Evenepoel. The final kilometers saw a flurry of attacks, with Vingegaard initiating the decisive move approximately 5.5km from the finish. Evenepoel and van der Poel were prominent in driving the pace toward the line.

“I followed the moves on the steep part of the climb,” Pogačar said. “Visma was clearly going for the stage win… Fortunately I had good legs and I covered all of the attacks.”

Their advantage diminished as the stage progressed, with Thierry eventually launching a solo attack. Later, Fred Wright joined Thierry before being caught with approximately 6.8km remaining. A series of attacks followed,setting the stage for the final showdown among the top contenders.

Pogacar acknowledged that he shifted his focus to the sprint in the final kilometers. With time bonuses, he leads Vingegaard by four seconds and Van der Poel by six. Evenepoel trails by ten seconds but appears to be in strong condition.
The Tour de France rivals are already testing each other. Pogacar said he was surprised to be in the yellow jersey.
“I was all prepared to come back to the bus pretty fast after the finish… But I don’t mind being here as well,” he said.
