[아이뉴스24 이진우 기자] The Pohang City Cheongha-myeon Youth Guidance Committee (Chairman Kwon Hee-chul) announced on the 1st that it held the ‘Cheongha Plogging with Youth’ in front of the Sangdae-ri village senior center in Cheongha-myeon, Buk-gu, Pohang on the 31st of last month.

A total of 40 members, ranging from elementary, middle, and high school students to adults in their 40s and 50s, participated in this event. Starting from the village senior center, they went around the Sangdaeri village and carried out environmental cleanup activities such as picking up trash.

‘Plocking’ is a combination of the Swedish word ‘Plocka upp (to pick up)’ and the English word ‘jogging’, and refers to an environmental protection activity of picking up trash while walking or jogging.

The Cheongha Youth Guidance Committee has been conducting ‘Cheongha Flocking with Youth’ by visiting villages in the Cheongha area every Saturday morning for 11 months since last year. The total number of villages they have visited so far is 28.

Eun-kyung Choi, the secretary of the Cheongha Youth Guidance Committee, said, “At first, everyone had a hard time, but now all the members voluntarily gather on Saturday mornings.” She added, “We hope that our small volunteer work will become an unforgettable nutrient for the youth, and that it will also become an opportunity for rural villages to become cleaner and more livable.”

Chairman Kwon Hee-cheol and Secretary-General Choi Eun-gyeong have been receiving attention from various media outlets and Pohang City since last year for organizing various programs such as ‘walking competition’ and ‘Hyanggyo stay’ in addition to village environmental purification.

Rather than teaching youth an authoritarian education, he is receiving applause from many as a model case that personally guides the direction of life through volunteer activities with adults and children.

Choi Du-bok, the village chief who recently returned to Sangdaeri Village and was elected as the village chief, said, “I am grateful that young people visited the village, which is mostly populated by elderly people, and I am also thankful that they cleaned the alleyways of the village.”

The Cheongha Youth Guidance Committee’s ‘Cheongha Flocking’ is a valuable opportunity to bring about positive changes in the local community and instill proper values and community awareness in young people.
