Poland and Allies Scramble Jets as Russia Pounds Ukraine in Massive Air assault
Warsaw, Poland (CNN) – In a dramatic escalation of tensions, Poland and its allied military forces scrambled aircraft Saturday morning following a massive Russian air attack against Ukraine. The strikes,which included bombings near UkraineS western border with Poland,triggered a swift response from NATO allies already on high alert.
The Polish army announced the deployment on X, stating, “Due to the activity of the long-range aviation of the russian Federation, which is carrying out attacks in the territory of Ukraine, Polish and Allied aviation has begun to operate in our airspace.” The statement emphasized the readiness of Polish forces, noting that “service fighters and terrestrial air defense systems have been deployed and also radiolocation recognition have reached a state of maximum preparation.”
The aerial assault on Ukraine was extensive, with kyiv’s Air Force reporting that Russia launched 579 attack drones and various types of simulated drones. In addition, Moscow unleashed eight ballistic missiles and 32 cruise missiles, targeting critical infrastructure and civilian areas.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks, stating, “Throughout the night, Ukraine suffered a massive attack by Russia.” He reported that at least three people where killed and dozens injured in the bombings.
“each attack of this type is not a military necessity, but a deliberate strategy of Russia to terrorize the civilian population and destroy our infrastructure,” Zelensky asserted. “That is why a strong international response is needed.”
The recent surge in Russian aerial activity follows a concerning pattern of airspace violations in Eastern europe. Just hours before the Ukrainian attack, NATO intercepted three Russian MIG-31 combat planes that violated Estonia’s airspace.
The human cost of the relentless Russian attacks continues to mount. Regional authorities report that at least eight people have died and 32 have been injured in Russian bombings over the past 24 hours.The international community is watching closely as the situation unfolds, with calls for a strong and unified response to Russia’s aggression.
