Poland has lost its position as a leader in cheap fuel across Europe following the conclusion of the second edition of the government CPN initiative, according to reports from Gazeta Wyborcza and analysis by the European Commission.

Motorists driving on Polish roads no longer enjoy a guaranteed discount compared to their Central European neighbors. Fresh data published by Gazeta Wyborcza based on European Commission findings shows that fuel prices at Polish stations have climbed closer to broader European averages after the state-backed subsidy program wound down.

European Fuel Price Comparisons and Regional Rankings

According to reporting from Gazeta Wyborcza based on European Commission findings, the average price for a liter of diesel in Poland reached the equivalent of 1.98 euro at the start of the week. While that figure remains below the overall European Union average of 2.11 euro per liter, several neighboring countries now offer lower rates at the pump.

Drivers crossing southern borders find cheaper diesel in Czechia, where the average cost sits at 1.96 euro per liter. Slovakia reports an average of 1.91 euro, and Hungary records 1.86 euro. More substantial savings appear further away or in other regional markets; Spain prices diesel at 1.80 euro, Bulgaria at 1.81 euro, and Romania, Slovenia, and Croatia also underbid Polish averages.

For unleaded 95 gasoline, Poland recorded an average of 1.81 euro per liter at the beginning of the week, against an EU average of 2.04 euro. Slovakia offers gasoline at 1.77 euro, Croatia at 1.73 euro, Hungary at 1.64 euro, and Slovenia at 1.63 euro. Sweden prices its gasoline lower still at an average of 1.59 euro, while Bulgaria registers the lowest rate among analyzed markets at 1.57 euro.

The shift in relative pricing follows the expiration of the government CPN program, which kept localized costs suppressed. Without those interventions, domestic prices have aligned more closely with broader continental trends shaped by international commodity markets.

However, ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to drive market volatility and unpredictable pricing for refined petroleum products, particularly diesel fuel, according to Gazeta Wyborcza.
