Poland Takes to the Skies: The Highly Anticipated F-35 Fighter Jet Makes Its Historic Debut
Poland’s F-35A Fighter Jets and the US’s Javelin Anti-Tank Missiles: Strengthening Military Capabilities
Poland has taken a significant step in bolstering its military capabilities with the purchase of 32 F-35A fighter jets from the United States. The $4.6 billion contract, signed in 2020, includes logistics support, training, and flight simulators. Although the first F-35As are scheduled to be delivered this year, Polish pilots are currently undergoing training in the United States. The transfer of these fighter jets to Poland is expected to begin in 2026 and be completed by 2030.
Once all 32 F-35As are operational in Poland, they will be renamed Husarz, reflecting the country’s efforts to strengthen its military capabilities. In recent years, Poland has invested heavily in domestic equipment production and purchased the latest tanks and aircraft from the US and South Korea. The Polish government has also signed an agreement with the US to purchase AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles and AGM-158B-2 JASSM cruise missiles for future F-35s.
US to Produce 4,000 Javelin Anti-Tank Missiles for Ukraine
The US Army has awarded a production contract to the Javelin JV, which includes the production of over 4,000 Javelin anti-tank missiles and related equipment and services. The contract, valued at $1.3 billion, aims to replenish the missile stockpile sent to Ukraine and underscores the US commitment to maintaining its arsenal while supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
The Javelin, also known as the FGM-148 Javelin, is a mobile anti-tank missile system jointly developed by Raytheon and Lockheed Martin. This system is designed to destroy tanks, armored targets, and hardened targets from shoulder-launched tubes. The missile has the ability to lock on to the target before launching and operates on the “fire and forget” principle, allowing the operator to remain undetected immediately after launch.
The Javelin is renowned for its exceptional armor-destroying capabilities, making it the premier anti-tank weapon in the modern arsenal. Its dual-explosive warhead, with a pre-launch warhead to neutralize reactive armor and a main warhead to penetrate the base armor, allows the missile to defeat the most advanced armor systems on modern main battle tanks, including those equipped with explosive reactive armor (ERA).
Another notable feature of the Javelin is its ability to penetrate the roof of armored vehicles, where the armor is thinnest. When it explodes, the warhead can penetrate up to 800mm of rolled homogeneous steel (RHA), effectively neutralizing heavily armored vehicles.
According to recent reports, the US has provided over 10,000 Javelin missiles and hundreds of launchers to Ukraine since the conflict broke out in February 2022. These transfers are part of a military aid package aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s defenses against Russian aggression.
