Instead of a conventional rear window, the Polestar 4 features a covered rear section with an aluminum body panel. Drivers rely on a high-resolution digital rearview mirror that displays a live feed from a roof-mounted camera. According to Polestar’s website, the display offers a resolution of 1480 x 320 pixels and provides a “panoramic view of the outside,” with enhanced visibility in low-light and rainy conditions.

The system is complemented by four short-range cameras for 360-degree views, ultrasonic sensors, and mid-range radar to detect potential threats. Additional safety and convenience features include speed limit sign recognition, which displays the posted limit on the driver’s interface and triggers an audible warning if exceeded, and adaptive headlights that automatically switch between high and low beams when detecting oncoming vehicles or taillights ahead.

The Wall Street Journal noted that traditional rear-view windows are often ineffective due to their placement—typically five feet off the ground—making objects like traffic cones invisible within 35 feet. By contrast, the Polestar 4’s camera-based system provides a clearer, more consistent view of the area behind the vehicle, particularly in adverse weather or low-light scenarios.

Aerodynamic efficiency is another key benefit of the design. Removing the rear window reduces drag and turbulence, which is especially important for an electric vehicle where energy efficiency directly impacts driving range. Polestar states that the change also improves rear headroom by allowing a lower roofline without compromising structural integrity, particularly in rollover protection.

Inside, the digital mirror is designed to feel familiar. It mirrors the shape and positioning of a conventional rearview mirror, with a reversed image that mimics natural depth perception. The system includes graphical overlays and warning tones to assist with distance judgment, along with auto-dimming functionality to reduce glare from headlights at night.

The Polestar 4 also includes a comprehensive suite of safety systems, deploying seven airbags in the event of a collision. Exterior sensing is supported by 11 cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and mid-range radar, enabling advanced driver assistance features such as obstacle detection and intervention when necessary.

As the fourth model from the Volvo Cars and Geely collaboration, the Polestar 4 blends premium design with technological innovation. Its “SUV coupe” silhouette emphasizes modern aesthetics over traditional utility cues, reflecting what Polestar describes as an “orbital chic” design philosophy. While the absence of a rear window may require an adjustment period, early feedback suggests that drivers adapt quickly to the digital mirror, finding it intuitive and reliable once accustomed.
