Police investigate fatal shooting in Calgary’s northwest – Global News

One man is dead and another is hospitalized following a shooting in the parking lot of the North Hill Co-op in Calgary on May 11, 2026.

Calgary police responded to reports of shots fired at 520 16 Ave just before 8 p.m. On May 11, 2026. Upon arrival, officers discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds; one individual was located inside the store and the other was found outside.

Both victims were transported to the Foothills Medical Centre in life-threatening condition. Police later confirmed that one of the men has died. The second man’s condition was upgraded to stable, and he was expected to undergo surgery on May 12, 2026.

Investigation and Suspects

Investigators stated that three suspects fled the area before police arrived. As of May 12, 2026, no arrests have been made and no one is in custody.

Police believe the shooting was targeted and have indicated there is no active or ongoing risk to the general public. As a precautionary measure to protect customers and staff, the grocery store was placed into lockdown, though that lockdown has since been lifted.

Duty Inspector Darren Smith expressed concern over the timing and location of the violence during a press conference held at the scene on the night of May 11, 2026.

Obviously, we are incredibly concerned that this occurred in broad daylight in a grocery store while people were … Going about their business, grocery shopping. Dozens and dozens of people could’ve been hurt in this incident. No shooting is acceptable, but to do something like this in the middle of the day puts far too great a risk on public safety.
