Police launch investigation into threats against Aston Villa star Tyrone Mings – footboom1.com
West Midlands Police are investigating death threats against Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings in a serious incident that has shocked the football world. The insidious online message appeared on Instagram just days after Mings made his Champions League debut, resulting in a 1-0 defeat to Club Brugge.
The damning post included the ominous declaration, “I won’t be alive next year,” along with a nasty comment that ended with the words “RIP to you.” Threats like this cannot be tolerated under any circumstances, but especially in the world of sports, where communities should come together in support rather than hate.
Lifelong Aston Villa supporter Michael Clarke, 47, from Harbourne, was stunned by the comment which was beyond words and immediately reported it to West Midlands Police. Police confirmed: “We have received a report of an online threat against a football player and are investigating.”
Clarke said: “I felt this was a clear threat to his life and had no choice but to report it to the police. No football player should be exposed to such a terrible threat. This is to protect the player and “This is to ensure their health. I have also contacted Aston Villa and the head of security regarding this matter.”
The disturbing incident occurred when goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez provided a goal kick to Mings. Mings innocently picked up the ball right after the play was made. Trying to rectify the situation, Mings returned the ball inside the six-yard box to allow Martinez to retake. Unfortunately for the Villains, interference by Brugge players forced referee Tobias Steeler to award a penalty to the home team.
Police reiterated the importance of public co-operation in incidents such as this, saying: “Anyone with information is asked to live chat on our website or call 101, quoting log number 5280-071124. ” he called out. Sports should unite us and incidents like this are a reminder that we must address the dark side of fandom.
