Auckland police are investigating after a resident awoke to find an unknown man standing inside their home in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred at a residential property in the Auckland suburb of Mt Albert shortly before 5:00 am, when the occupant reported hearing movement and discovered a stranger in their living space.

According to a statement from New Zealand Police, the resident confronted the individual, who then fled the scene on foot. No physical harm was reported and nothing appears to have been taken during the intrusion.

Officers attended the scene and conducted a search of the surrounding area, but the suspect was not located. Police have since released a description of the man, noting he was wearing dark clothing and had a distinctive tattoo on his neck described as resembling a “gothic or Irish clover” design.

Detective Senior Sergeant Anna Hughes of the Auckland City Police said investigators are treating the incident as a burglary and are urging anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the Mt Albert area between 4:30 am and 5:30 am on Tuesday to come forward.

“We are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who may have captured dashcam or CCTV footage in the vicinity,” Hughes said. “Even small details can help us identify the person responsible.”

Police have also appealed to the public to check private security cameras and doorbell recordings, which may have captured the suspect entering or leaving the property.

The case is being linked to a separate burglary reported earlier the same morning in the neighbouring suburb of Owairaka, where a home was entered and items stolen. While investigators have not confirmed a direct connection, they are examining similarities in the suspect’s description and timing.

Authorities have emphasized that there is no indication the resident was targeted specifically, and believe the intrusion may have been opportunistic.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Auckland Central Police on 105 or anonymously via Crime Stoppers at 0800 555 111.
