Swiss equestrian legend Pius Schwizer, an Olympic bronze medalist and former world number one, is facing a challenging situation as authorities reportedly confiscated horses from his property in Oensingen, Solothurn. The action stems from ongoing financial difficulties and debt allegations against the renowned show jumper.
Police Raid and Horse Confiscation: A Witness Account
According to an anonymous witness, a significant police presence descended upon Schwizer’s farm. “The entire courtyard was filled with vehicles and police officers,” the witness stated, adding that “trucks of various sizes” were present. The witness reported that six horses were taken away, while other sources indicate the number may have been five. The Solothurn cantonal police confirmed the raid took place on Thursday evening.
From Olympic Glory to Financial Woes: A Stark Contrast
Pius Schwizer’s sporting achievements are undeniable. his illustrious career includes an Olympic bronze medal, a European Championship gold medal, a stint as the world’s top-ranked rider, and multiple Swiss championship titles. However, these successes stand in stark contrast to his current financial struggles.
Schwizer has been embroiled in legal battles over unpaid debts. In June of last year, creditors reportedly sought approximately 600,000 francs from him.Among those creditors is Brigitte Schreier, who claims to have lent Schwizer 500,000 francs. Schreier and her husband subsequently sued him for 380,000 francs after he allegedly failed to honor their agreement. While still awaiting 200,000 francs, Schreier denies any involvement in the recent police action.
Schwizer’s Response: Paying Debts and Blaming Creditor Pressure
Schwizer acknowledges the police visit but downplays its meaning, stating, ”It’s always the same.” He claims to be actively working to pay off his debts and that creditors have already received partial payments. However, he criticizes their demands for “everything at once,” arguing that one “can’t spend more than you earn.”
The equestrian star believes the police intervention was a result of pressure exerted by his creditors on the authorities. He also expressed frustration that such actions frequently enough occur when he is away competing, stating, “They know when I’m not there and come at exactly that moment.”
The Pandemic’s Lingering Impact: A Contributing Factor?
Pius Schwizer attributes his financial difficulties, in part, to the lingering effects of the coronavirus pandemic. “Sometimes you only notice it four or five years later,” he explained. He maintains his commitment to fulfilling his financial obligations but requests patience from his creditors, assuring them, “They will be repaid. They just have to be patient.”
The situation remains fluid, and the exact nature of the authorities’ accusations against Pius Schwizer is currently unclear. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
