Man Fatally Shot by Police Responding to Domestic Assault in Yarra Junction
Yarra Junction, VIC – A man has died after being shot by police at a property east of Melbourne on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 pm on Warburton Highway in Yarra junction,following reports of a man assaulting a woman.
According to police, two officers arrived at the scene and witnessed a man assaulting a woman. During the confrontation, one of the officers discharged their firearm.
Emergency services were called to the location, but the man could not be revived. the woman involved in the assault was transported by air ambulance to hospital and is currently receiving treatment for serious injuries. A spokesperson for the Royal Melbourne Hospital confirmed on Thursday morning that the woman remains in a critical condition.
The man and woman are believed to have known each other.
State Coroner John Cain attended the crime scene on Wednesday night.The homicide Squad has commenced an inquiry into the fatal shooting, with oversight from the Professional Standards Command, a standard procedure for such incidents.Police are expected to provide further details at a press conference scheduled for Thursday morning.
