Police forces across multiple jurisdictions have issued urgent warnings about a surge in sophisticated phishing scams where fraudsters impersonate law enforcement officers during fake video calls on platforms such as Google Meet, attempting to deceive victims into revealing sensitive personal and financial information.

The warnings follow a pattern of increasing reports involving individuals posing as police officers who initiate contact through unsolicited video calls, often claiming to be investigating fraud or identity theft involving the victim’s bank accounts. During these calls, scammers use official-looking uniforms, badges, and backgrounds to create a convincing illusion of legitimacy, then pressure victims into providing banking credentials, one-time passwords, or transferring funds to so-called “safe accounts.”

In one recent case highlighted by authorities in Singapore, scammers used Google Meet to connect with victims, displaying fabricated police identification and claiming to be from the Commercial Affairs Department. Victims were told their bank accounts were linked to criminal activity and were instructed to transfer money to assist in an ongoing investigation. Once funds were sent, the scammers terminated the call, and disappeared.
