Policlinico Gemelli Debuts Italy’s First AI-Powered OCT and Functional Assessment Software
- Gemelli Irccs in Rome has become the first hospital in Italy to implement artificial intelligence software designed to guide coronary angioplasty procedures.
- The software officially debuted in the hospital's haemodynamics room on March 30, 2026.
- Ultreon 3.0 utilizes artificial intelligence to guide coronary revascularisation procedures through endocoronary imaging, which includes the integration of optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging and functional evaluation.
Policlinico Universitario A. Gemelli Irccs in Rome has become the first hospital in Italy to implement artificial intelligence software designed to guide coronary angioplasty procedures. The technology, known as Ultreon 3.0, is used to increase the precision and personalization of coronary revascularisation, specifically during the placement of stents.
The software officially debuted in the hospital’s haemodynamics room on March 30, 2026. The Rome-based institution is one of the first three centers in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) region to introduce this AI-based guidance system.
Ultreon 3.0 utilizes artificial intelligence to guide coronary revascularisation procedures through endocoronary imaging, which includes the integration of optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging and functional evaluation. This integration allows specialists to perform stent procedures with higher accuracy based on the specific anatomical and functional data of the patient’s coronary arteries.
Technical Framework of Interventional Cardiology 3.0
The hospital describes this implementation as a move toward interventional cardiology 3.o
. This technical evolution focuses on technology that is increasingly precise, personalized, and oriented toward specific clinical results.

By utilizing AI to analyze imaging and functional data in real time, the software supports the cardiologist in making more informed decisions during the procedure. This approach is intended to open a new era for the precision of diagnosis and therapy
within the field of interventional cardiology.
The selection of Policlinico Universitario A. Gemelli Irccs for the introduction of Ultreon 3.0 was based on the scientific and clinical experience of its specialists and its role as a primary reference center for interventional cardiology and related research in Italy.
Institutional AI Infrastructure
The adoption of AI in cardiology is part of a broader technological strategy at the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario A. Gemelli IRCCS. The hospital operates the Gemelli Generator, a multidisciplinary center focused on the clinical and scientific valorization of data from the institution’s Data Warehouse (DWH).
The Gemelli Generator is tasked with developing innovative projects and solutions that support healthcare processes and clinical research through the analysis of institutional data.
Other departments at the hospital have also explored AI applications. Research conducted by the Ophthalmology Department between May 2019 and October 2023 evaluated the use of large language models, including ChatGPT and Google Gemini, as assistance for glaucoma surgical cases.
These combined efforts in interventional cardiology, data management, and surgical assistance indicate a systemic shift toward digitizing patient management and incorporating AI-driven decision support across multiple medical specialties.
