The boeing 737 MAX, grounded worldwide in March 2019 following two fatal crashes, has undergone extensive software updates and safety reviews, leading to its recertification by aviation authorities. As of January 25, 2026, the 737 MAX is operating commercially in most major markets, though ongoing scrutiny and compensation claims related to the crashes continue.
The Initial Grounding and Accidents
The Boeing 737 MAX was grounded globally on March 13, 2019, after two crashes – Lion Air Flight 610 on October 29, 2018, and ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 on March 10, 2019 – killed a total of 346 people. Both crashes were linked to a faulty Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS).
Detail: MCAS was designed to automatically push the nose of the aircraft down if it detected a potential stall, but it relied on input from a single angle-of-attack sensor. In both crashes, a faulty sensor triggered MCAS, and pilots struggled to regain control. Investigations revealed that pilots were not adequately informed about MCAS and lacked sufficient training to respond to its activation.
Example/Evidence: the final report of the Joint Investigators Team (JIT) for the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crash, released on July 18, 2019, explicitly cited the MCAS system as a contributing factor. Ethiopian Transport Accident Investigation Bureau Final Report
Recertification Process and Software Updates
The Federal aviation Administration (FAA) initiated a complete review of the 737 MAXS design and safety systems. Boeing developed software updates to address the MCAS issues, including making it less aggressive and relying on input from two angle-of-attack sensors.
Detail: The FAA required Boeing to redesign the MCAS software, update flight control computer software, and provide enhanced pilot training. The agency also conducted its own independent safety assessments and simulations. Other aviation authorities, such as the European Union aviation Safety Agency (EASA), conducted their own parallel reviews.
Example/Evidence: The FAA issued a final rule lifting the grounding order on November 18, 2020, after determining that the required safety modifications had been implemented. FAA Final Rule
Return to Service and Current Status (as of January 25, 2026)
Following recertification, the 737 MAX gradually returned to service, starting with American airlines in December 2020. As of January 25, 2026, the aircraft is operating commercially with most major airlines worldwide, including United Airlines, Southwest airlines, and Ryanair.
Detail: While the 737 MAX is back in service,Boeing continues to face legal challenges and financial repercussions related to the crashes. Families of the victims have filed lawsuits seeking compensation, and investigations into Boeing’s safety culture are ongoing. Production rates have been steadily increasing to meet airline demand, but supply chain issues have occasionally caused delays.
Example/Evidence: Boeing reported delivering 397 737 MAX aircraft in 2023, and aims to increase production to 40-45 per month in late 2024/early 2025. Boeing 2023 Full Year Results. As of December 31,2025,Boeing has settled the majority of wrongful death claims related to the crashes, with some cases still pending.
