Venezuelan Government Begins Releasing Political Prisoners
Caracas, Venezuela – The Venezuelan government announced Thursday the release of a significant number of political prisoners, both Venezuelan and foreign nationals, according to Jorge Rodríguez, president of the National Assembly and chief negotiator for the government in talks with the U.S. administration of Donald Trump. The exact number of those being released was not specified.
The proclamation follows a statement by Trump suggesting el helicoide, the headquarters of Venezuela’s intelligence service and widely considered a major torture center in Latin America, was being closed. Venezuelan authorities have not confirmed the closure.
“State institutions have decided on the release of a significant number of Venezuelan and foreign individuals, and these release processes are happening at this very moment,” Rodríguez stated outside the Federal Legislative Palace.
El Helicoide has been the site of documented human rights abuses for years. Numerous international organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have reported on the systematic torture and inhumane conditions within the facility. Human Rights Watch’s venezuela page provides further details on the situation.
The releases appear to be linked to ongoing negotiations between the Venezuelan government and the United States, aimed at securing free and fair elections and addressing concerns over human rights and democracy in Venezuela. The U.S. State Department maintains a detailed overview of U.S. policy toward Venezuela on its website.
