Driven by a lifelong love for animals and a passion for medicine,a 28-year-old from Ponce,Puerto Rico, has ventured to‍ Australia to pursue his veterinary career. Drawn to the country’s rich biodiversity, estimated between 20,000 and 30,000 species, he sought to contribute to animal⁣ welfare on a global scale.

after completing his high ‍school studies, ⁣he applied to veterinary schools with the intention of experiencing new cultures and languages. This‌ led to his acceptance into the University of Sydney, a faculty ⁢recognized as ⁣a leading institution worldwide.

It was a good ⁤prospect to leave my comfort zone and experience new things, he said.

Experiences in Australia

During his studies, he had the opportunity to work with a variety of animals, including elephants in Thailand.⁤ He emphasized the importance of ethical‍ treatment and respect for wildlife.

Since I had never been so close to elephants, it was very nice, of course, he⁢ said.

He advocates for stronger animal protection laws, drawing a comparison between Australia and⁢ Puerto Rico. He admires the respect for animal‍ welfare in Sydney, including the protection of native species.

something that I love, at ⁣least Sydney specifically, is that they comply with these animal laws and Australians love animals and always try to take care of them as possible, including the native ⁣spices here. They defend ⁢them a lot and here it ‌is indeed seen that‍ in reality the Australians take great care of the animals, whether dogs, cats and the native species that are as critically important for the ecosystem of Australia in this very way. In puerto Rico, I would say that what is needed is a little more to promote the‍ laws⁤ (against) animal violence, ⁤he said, stressing the need to prevent ‍animal abandonment.

Future⁣ Plans

The veterinarian⁣ plans to gain experience to⁢ specialize in veterinary ophthalmology. he intends to become licensed to ‍practice⁢ in the united states and Puerto Rico.

My plan would be that, continue working⁢ here and eventually return to the United⁤ states or Puerto Rico at least one place closer⁢ to where‌ my family is or my friends, he said.

Maintaining Culture

Despite the distance, he maintains his Puerto Rican culture. He noted the unique Australian accent and jargon as initial challenges.

at first, I made a little complicated with the language, because‍ they speak English, but‍ their accent is different. They also use a lot Yes, eventually, after the months, I⁣ could get used to and I no longer have problems, ⁣he recalled.

He was surprised to find a small Puerto Rican community in Sydney, allowing him ⁤to connect ⁤with others ⁢who share his ⁣heritage.

Now, ‍I have a group, I would say about 10 to 15 Puerto ‍Ricans who have lived here, including people who have been living in ⁤Sydney for many years and, obviously as we⁤ are Puerto Ricans, we always look for how to meet and share and share culture and‌ our ⁢traditions. But, there ⁣are not many ⁣Puerto Ricans here in Sydney or Australia in general, he‌ added.
