Kuching, Sarawak – The resumption of direct flights between Pontianak, Indonesia, and Kuching, Malaysia, has been met with optimism by residents of West Kalimantan’s capital, who frequently travel to Sarawak’s capital for family visits, medical appointments, and leisure. Though, many are calling for improved transport accessibility, more budget-friendly airfare, and greater affordability in healthcare and accommodation to truly unlock the potential of this vital cross-border connection.
A Vital Artery Reopened
for many in Pontianak, Kuching represents more than just a travel destination; it’s a crucial hub for family, healthcare, and cultural exchange. Melisa, a 26-year-old Indonesian working for an agency in Pontianak, highlights the significance of this connection. “In my view, it’s critically important to improve transport accessibility, such as by opening more direct flights connecting Pontianak and Kuching,” she states, emphasizing her desire for better air connectivity.Melisa also points to the need for more affordable airfare rates, suggesting that pricing should be sensitive to the income levels in different regions. This sentiment is echoed by Idham Suryana, 46, who travels to Kuching for medical treatment for his 12-year-old son, Razqa Alfarizqe, who suffers from seizures.”I choose Kuching for treatment becuase it suits my son’s needs very well,” Idham shares. “He has a follow-up this coming September.”
However, the financial strain of these medical journeys is considerable. Idham reveals that the medical bills for each trip total 8,000,000 Indonesian rupiah (over RM2,000), a notable burden for his family. He hopes that hospitals might consider lowering treatment package rates and that accommodation in Kuching could become more affordable to ease the financial pressure on medical travellers.
The Impact of Flight Suspensions
The disruption caused by the suspension of direct flights in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic underscored the importance of air connectivity.Without flights, residents like Melisa and Idham were forced to endure arduous land journeys, often lasting seven to eight hours. These trips involved navigating narrow roads and border crossings at Tebedu and Biawak on the Sarawak side. The route via Entikong towards the tebedu-entikong border, a single-lane road in each direction, was particularly challenging, with frequent potholes making for a bumpy and exhausting ride, despite some road improvements.
Kuching’s enduring Appeal
Despite the logistical challenges, all three Indonesians interviewed speak fondly of Kuching. They praise its cleanliness, diverse culinary scene, rich culture, and distinctive architecture, citing the new State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex as a notable example. These positive attributes continue to draw visitors from Pontianak, reinforcing Kuching’s appeal as a desirable destination.
Hopes for the Future
With the direct flights now back in operation, there is a strong belief that this route will once again serve as a vital artery, fostering economic growth, boosting tourism, and strengthening healthcare ties between Pontianak and Kuching. The calls for improved accessibility, affordable airfares, and more budget-friendly healthcare and accommodation options are crucial for maximizing the benefits of this renewed connection and ensuring that more residents from Pontianak can continue to experience all that Kuching has to offer.
