Pope Francis’ Visit to East Timor: A Beacon of Hope and Renewal
Pope Francis’ visit to East Timor on the 9th has been met with great enthusiasm from the people of the South Asian country. Father Jovito, the auxiliary bishop of the Dili Diocese, expressed his hopes that the Pope’s visit would not only bring “fresh air” to the faith but also inject new vitality into the country’s institutions and people.
As the vicar general of the diocese, Father Jovito is in charge of pastoral work. He awaits the arrival of Pope Francis with an “open heart.” “All the people of East Timor, the Church, the government, and the entire country are looking forward to the Pope’s visit with open hearts,” he said.
Integrating Faith into Local Culture
Father Jovito emphasized the importance of integrating faith into local culture, a core theme that is also reflected in the motto adopted by the Bishops of the East Timor Episcopal Conference: “Let your faith be our culture.” This desire aims to make faith the main element of East Timorese society and daily life. However, Father Jovito acknowledged the challenges that come with this goal, including the country’s past pain caused by hatred and violence.
Empowering the Youth
Another key aspect of the Pope’s visit is the focus on young people, who make up the majority of the population of East Timor. Father Jovito stressed the importance of dialogue between the Pope and young people, who will gather at the “Conference Center” on September 11. The Holy Father will meet with over a thousand young people, and another two thousand will be waiting in front of the square for his arrival.
“He will talk to them and listen to them,” said Father Jovito, who hopes that this meeting will bring about the long-awaited renewal. “Maybe, this is an opportunity to achieve the changes we need. Yes. We really hope so.”
A Message of Hope
Father Jovito concluded by expressing his hopes that the Pope’s visit would bring “the power of hope for change” not only to East Timor but also to the entire Church. “Just as the Pope is a pilgrim from Rome, we will be pilgrims from East Timor to Rome to rekindle the hope of all people in God.”
