Pope Francis Meets with Fellow Jesuits in Indonesia
On the second day of his apostolic journey in Indonesia, Pope Francis met with 200 of his fellow Jesuits at the Apostolic Nunciature in Jakarta. This private meeting, which lasted about an hour, is a customary part of the Pope’s international pastoral visits.
The meeting was described as warm and cordial by Father Anton Xi, Undersecretary General of the Congregation for Culture and Education. The Pope was said to be in a relaxed atmosphere, feeling at home among his fellow Jesuits. He was particularly happy to see many young congregants in attendance.
During the meeting, the Pope discussed the importance of discernment and prayer within the Society of Jesus. He also shared anecdotes with the youngest members, who asked about finding time to pray. The conversation touched on key issues in Indonesia, including interreligious dialogue and the inculturation of faith, which the Pope actively promotes.
The Pope’s pastoral visit to four countries in Asia and the Pacific will include two more meetings with Jesuits, one in East Timor and the last in Singapore. These meetings provide an opportunity for the Pope to connect with his fellow Jesuits and discuss important issues affecting the region.
