Details of the Attack
Pope Leo, while addressing a conference in Peru in 2019, revealed he was physically assaulted during a visit to Ireland. The incident occurred while he was walking in public, and a man verbally identified him as a priest before initiating the attack.
Fortunately, another Augustinian priest, described as being considerably larger in stature, intervened to defend Pope Leo. The Pope did not disclose the exact location or date of the assault, but noted it was a unique experience in his travels worldwide.
Context of Changing Attitudes
Pope leo connected the attack to a broader shift in attitudes toward the Catholic Church, notably in Ireland following the widespread exposure of clerical abuse scandals beginning in the 1990s. He suggested the assailant’s motivations may have stemmed from personal experiences as a victim or a loss of faith in the Church, acknowledging the profound impact of these issues.
“I don’t know if he was a victim or had lost faith in the church, I have no idea what happened to him. But I truly believe it is a very important factor in the experience hear in the church as well,” Pope Leo stated.
Visits to Ireland
Pope leo is known to have visited Ireland on two occasions: in 2005 and 2007. The timing of the assault remains unclear, but occurred during one of these or a subsequent, unpublicized visit.
