Pope Leo XIV Criticizes Rising Nationalism, Prays for Peace
VATICAN CITY—Pope Leo XIV, during Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Square, voiced strong criticism against the surge of nationalist political movements worldwide. Addressing tens of thousands of faithful, the pontiff emphasized the need for reconciliation and dialogue, aligning with his papacy’s focus on fostering global peace and unity.
The pope implored the Holy Spirit to dismantle “barriers” and “walls of indifference and hatred.” He stressed that love leaves no space for prejudice or exclusionary mindsets, which he lamented are increasingly visible within political nationalisms.While the frist American pontiff did not specify countries or politicians,his message underscored a commitment to bridging divides.
Leo XIV also referenced Pope Francis’s 2023 Pentecost observation that despite being connected,people are often disconnected,”anaesthetized by indifference and overwhelmed by solitude.”
Condemning ongoing wars, the pope sought the Holy spirit’s “gift of peace,” prioritizing inner peace as a foundation for spreading harmony within families, societies, and international relations. He specifically prayed for reconciliation and dialogue in war-torn regions.
Soon after his election, Leo XIV declared peace a central pillar of his papacy, demonstrated by his initial message, “Peace be with you all.” he has consistently advocated for genuine peace in Ukraine and a ceasefire in Gaza, underscoring his dedication to global peace efforts and denouncing nationalism.
