Pope​ Francis appointed Archbishop Piero Pioppo as the new​ apostolic Nuncio ‌to ‌Spain ‍and the Principality of Andorra, as⁣ announced by the Vatican on ‌an unspecified date prior to September 16, 2025. This role represents the papal ambassador to both the Kingdom of Spain⁣ and⁢ the small, autonomous principality nestled in the Pyrenees ⁤mountains between France and Spain.

Archbishop ​Pioppo previously served ‌as the Apostolic Nuncio to Indonesia and the Association of Southeast ​Asian Nations (ASEAN), demonstrating a⁤ strong background in diplomatic service within the Catholic ⁣church.

Biographical Data

Born​ in Savona, Italy, in 1960, Archbishop Pioppo holds ⁢a Doctorate in Dogmatic theology. He was ordained​ and incardinated into the Diocese of Acqui Terme, Italy, in 1985.

He entered the diplomatic⁤ service of the Holy See in ‌1993, gaining experience in Korea, Chile, and within the secretariat of State. ⁣ From⁢ 2006 to 2010, he served as ⁣Prelate of the Institute for ​the Works of religion.

On January‌ 25, 2010, he was appointed Titular Archbishop of Torcello and Apostolic Nuncio to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, receiving Episcopal Ordination in March of the same year. ‌ He was⁢ subsequently appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Indonesia in September ⁤2017, with ⁤the additional duty of representing the Holy See to ASEAN the following year.
