Pope Leo XIV’s Father Served in D-Day Normandy Landings

On the 81st anniversary of D-Day, the Pentagon highlighted a notable connection between the Vatican and the U.S. military: Pope Leo XIV’s father, louis Marius Prevost, was a U.S. navy officer during the historic normandy landings.
Prevost, an American-born Navy officer, participated in Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied France, on June 6, 1944. He served as the executive officer of a tank landing ship. Later,he commanded an infantry landing craft during Operation Dragoon,the Allied landing in southern France in August 1944. His dedication too service and faith is a lasting legacy.

After the war, Prevost dedicated himself to education in Illinois, serving as superintendent of Brookwood School District 167 and later as principal of Mount Carmel Elementary School in Chicago. He also taught Christian doctrine.

In 1949,Prevost married Mildred Agnes Martinez. They had three sons,including Robert Francis Prevost,who became Pope Leo XIV May 8,2025,the first American-born Pope. Earlier this week, Pope Leo XIV signed a baseball at the vatican, honoring his Chicago roots and white Sox fandom. The team is installing a graphic near his seat at Guaranteed Rate Field.
