Pope Leo XIV Trump Gaza Peace Plan: Realistic Proposal
A Glimmer of Hope for Gaza? Pope Leo XIV Sees ‘Realistic Proposal’ in Trump’s Peace Plan, Urges Ceasefire and Hostage Release
CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy – October 1, 2025 – In a moment that could signal a crucial turning point for the war-torn Gaza Strip, Pope Leo XIV has offered a cautious but hopeful endorsement of the peace plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. Speaking from Villa Barberini, his papal residence in Castel Gandolfo, late Tuesday, the pontiff described the initiative as a “realistic proposal,” while firmly reiterating the urgent need for a ceasefire and the release of all hostages.
The Pope’s remarks, made during a press conference where he addressed a range of issues, come as the international community grapples with the escalating humanitarian crisis and the relentless conflict between Israel and Hamas. “We hope they accept it,” Pope Leo XIV stated, referring to the Trump plan.”So far, it truly seems to be a realistic proposal.”
However, the spiritual leader of over a billion Catholics underscored the non-negotiable human elements at the heart of any lasting peace. “It’s vital, nonetheless, that there be a ceasefire and the release of the hostages,” he emphasized. “But there are elements there that I think are vrey interesting, and I hope Hamas will accept it within the established time frame.”
The 20-point plan, unveiled on September 29 by President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, aims to bring an end to the devastating war. central to its framework is the establishment of a temporary governing body in Gaza, which would be headed by Trump himself and include former British Prime Minister tony blair. Crucially, the proposal explicitly states that it does not require population displacement – a detail that will offer meaningful relief to the hundreds of thousands displaced by the conflict. The plan also calls for an immediate end to hostilities, contingent upon certain conditions.
While the details of the extensive plan are still emerging, and its acceptance by Hamas remains unknown, Pope Leo XIV’s measured optimism injects a new dimension into the diplomatic efforts. His focus on the immediate cessation of violence and the safe return of captives highlights the profound human cost of the conflict, placing the welfare of ordinary people at the forefront of the global conversation.
The world now watches to see if this “realistic proposal,” backed by the moral authority of the Vatican, can indeed pave the way for a desperately needed peace in gaza.
