Pope Leo XIV concluded his 11-day apostolic journey across Africa in Equatorial Guinea, using the final leg of his trip to reiterate that his visit was focused on encouraging Catholics and promoting peace, not engaging in political disputes with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Speaking to journalists aboard the papal flight from Algeria to Cameroon earlier in the journey, Pope Leo XIV stated that he was in Africa to encourage Catholics and not to debate with the U.S. President, clarifying that his speeches had been prepared weeks in advance and should not be interpreted as attempts to renew a debate with President Trump.
He emphasized that any narrative suggesting he was trying to debate with the President was inaccurate and not in his interest, noting that the matter had been closed from the first day of the trip despite continued comments from President Trump and Vice President JD Vance in the following days.
During his time in Cameroon, Pope Leo XIV praised the country’s warm welcome and described it as representing “the heart of Africa,” highlighting its linguistic and ethnic diversity with around 250 local languages and ethnicities.
In Algeria, the Pope visited the Great Mosque of Algiers, where he reiterated the value of peace among different faiths, stating that although people have different beliefs and ways of worshipping, they can live together in peace.
He also spoke about the teachings of St. Augustine during a stop in Annaba, Algeria, describing it as a special honor to return to the city and offer the Church and the world the saint’s vision regarding the search for God, building community, seeking unity among all people, and respect for all peoples despite differences.
Throughout the journey, Pope Leo XIV maintained a focus on spiritual themes and interfaith dialogue, steering public discourse away from political controversies and toward the core purpose of his African pilgrimage.
