Pope Leo ⁢XIV Confirms Argentina Visit in 2026

Updated ⁢June 07, 2025

Pope Leo XIV, the second⁣ Latin american ⁤Pope, will visit Argentina in 2026. The announcement followed a 45-minute private meeting with Argentine President Javier Milei at the Vatican, according to Milei’s‌ spokesman⁤ Manuel Adorni.

The ‍upcoming trip marks⁢ a significant moment, as ⁤Pope Francis, though Argentine, never journeyed to ‍his homeland during⁣ his papacy. Sources within Milei’s⁢ team suggest the 2026 visit may also include⁤ stops in ⁤Peru and‌ Uruguay.

The Vatican released a statement noting that the Pope and the president discussed ongoing ⁢conflicts and the importance ⁤of working toward peace. They also addressed socioeconomic trends, poverty reduction, and promoting social ⁢cohesion.

Before his election as⁢ Pope, prevost served as a bishop in Peru ⁢starting in 2015, after a decade in the country. He is known for his advocacy for the poor, immigrants, and social justice.

The meeting with Milei is the second interview⁣ with a ⁤world ultra-right leader, after ⁢the hearing with ⁤the United States vice president, JD Vance, last May. These⁣ meetings are followed carefully because one of the greatest points of interest of this pontificate is how ⁣it will ‌face Leo XIV, American,⁤ the reactionary wave headed ⁢by Donald trump.

Milei, who onc referred ⁣to the Pope as “the evil representative ⁤on earth,” has ⁢as softened his stance. Following the death of Jorge Mario‌ Bergoglio, Milei called him “the most critically important Argentine in‌ history.”

“Pope ⁣Leo XIV confirmed to the president of the Nation⁤ during the meeting they held a moment ago that ‌he will visit Argentina,” Adorni wrote.

What’s next

Along with the planned trip to Argentina, Pope Leo XIV is expected to visit⁣ Türkiye, ⁤a trip ⁤initially scheduled by Pope Francis, ‍to commemorate the 1,300th anniversary of the Council⁢ of Nicea. This visit is‌ tentatively planned ‍for November.
