A Return to Tradition, with a Modern Touch
Pope Leo XIV is set to break with recent precedent by taking up residence in the Apostolic Palace, the official papal residence since 1870. This marks the first time in modern history a Pope will live in the palace, a departure from the practice of his predecessor, Pope Francis. Following Pope Francis’ death on April 21st, the apartment was secured, but remained unoccupied during his 12-year papacy.
Pope Francis notably chose to reside at the Santa Marta guesthouse, prioritizing consistent interaction with people over the formality of the palace. This decision was seen as a purposeful effort to distance himself from the perceived opulence associated with the papal residence. Leo XIV, though, appears to be charting a different course, though Vatican correspondent Iacopo Scaramuzzi of “La Repubblica” notes the new Pope is “different from Francisco, but not so different,” suggesting a balance between tradition and accessibility.
Restoration and Readiness for Papal Residence
The Apostolic Palace underwent meaningful restoration work in preparation for Pope leo XIV’s arrival. For twelve years, the apartment remained vacant, leading to issues with infiltrations and moisture damage. Technical teams worked to address these problems, ensuring the residence was fit for the new Pontiff. This refurbishment underscores the importance of restoring this historic space to it’s intended purpose.
Who Will join Pope Leo XIV?
While the full list of Pope Leo XIV’s household remains unconfirmed, it is known that Peruvian Father Edgard Rimaycuna, the personal secretary to the Holy father, will be among those sharing the residence, according to The Chicago Catholic. The identity of other “homemates” remains undisclosed, sparking curiosity about the Pope’s inner circle and the atmosphere he intends to cultivate within the Apostolic Palace.
