Pope Leo XIV called on religious communities to work together for peace and cautioned against the instrumentalization of God for political, economic, or military purposes during a meeting with representatives of the Muslim community of Senegal on May 9, 2026.
The meeting included leaders from various Muslim brotherhoods and communities of Senegal, as well as representatives of the Catholic Church in the country. The Pope described the gathering as an expression of friendship and a shared commitment to the promotion of a fraternal, inclusive and peaceful society.
The Role of Teranga in Dialogue
During the address, Pope Leo XIV highlighted the Senegalese concept of teranga, which he defined as hospitality and solidarity. He characterized Senegal as a land defined by strong family ties and the peaceful coexistence of Muslims, Christians, and believers of other traditions.

The Pope stated that this reality of coexistence serves as the foundation for dialogue between people of different ethnic origins and religious affiliations. He described this fraternity as a precious asset that must be safeguarded not only for the benefit of Senegal but for all of humanity.
Challenges Facing the African Continent
Pope Leo XIV addressed several critical issues currently affecting the African continent, noting that armed conflicts continue to persist. He stated that these conflicts lead to deep-seated inequalities and serious humanitarian crises that impact populations on a daily basis.
The Pope also identified a worrying rise in violent extremism and increasing flows of refugees and migrants. He warned that hate speech is poisoning the social fabric, while ethical and spiritual values, particularly among young people, are eroding alongside the weakening of family ties.
In light of these challenges, the Pope argued that the spirit of interreligious dialogue and the values of teranga are essential tools for easing tensions and establishing a lasting peace.
Interreligious Mediation and Diplomacy
Pope Leo XIV emphasized that religious leaders can provide a necessary moral framework to support diplomatic and political efforts. He suggested that involving these leaders in reconciliation and mediation initiatives can help prevent extremism.
By fostering interreligious dialogue and involving religious leaders in initiatives of mediation and reconciliation, politics and diplomacy can draw upon moral forces capable of easing tensions, preventing extremism and promoting a culture of mutual esteem and respect
Pope Leo XIV
The Pope concluded that such cooperation is vital for building a society based on mutual respect and for countering the forces that seek to use faith as a tool for gain or conflict.
