VATICAN CITY – Even before the commencement of the conclave in the Sistine Chapel to select Pope francis’s successor, speculation is rampant within the Vatican. The question on everyone’s mind: Who are the leading candidates to take over the papacy? The situation remains fluid, with potential for rapid change.
Cardinal Pizzaballa Loses Ground in Papal Race
Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Patriarch of Jerusalem, was previously considered a frontrunner. As the head of a crucial diocese, he has been lauded as a “bridge builder between religions,” a trait seen as valuable for a future Pope. Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re emphasized the importance of this quality in his sermon at Pope Francis‘s funeral, highlighting a core task for the Catholic Church’s future leader.
Expert Claims “Pretty Turned” Race, New Favorite Emerge
however, Pizzaballa’s status as the ideal candidate may be waning. Vatican expert Andreas English suggests a meaningful shift in the landscape.”I thought Pizzaballa was a possible successor, but that has turned pretty much in the past few days,” English stated.
English attributes this change to pizzaballa’s own actions. “Today (April 25th) I would tap Jean-Marc Aveline as he verbally held back.Pizzaballa was to offensive.”
The Volatile Nature of Papal Succession
Pizzaballa’s outspokenness may have cost him support among those closely following Vatican developments. In the lead-up to a conclave, discretion is paramount. Even minor missteps can be viewed unfavorably.
An old Vatican saying encapsulates this dynamic: “He who enters the conclave as Pope, leaves as a cardinal.” This highlights the precarious nature of being a frontrunner.
Cardinal Aveline: A Candidate with Ties to Francis
According to English,Jean-Marc Aveline, the Metropolitan archbishop of Marseille,is now a leading contender. Aveline has long been considered “papabile” and enjoyed a close relationship with Pope Francis. This connection could prove favorable, as Francis appointed a significant number of cardinals who likely share his vision.
Aveline has also maintained a neutral stance on contentious issues such as celibacy and the ordination of women, positioning him as a potentially unifying figure as the conclave approaches.
Vatican Expert’s personal Choice: Matteo Zuppi
When asked about his ideal successor to Pope Francis,English named Matteo Zuppi. “My desired candidate would be Matteo Zuppi,” English said, noting Zuppi’s commitment to being close to the people.
Zuppi has played a significant role as an envoy in the Ukraine conflict, facilitating the return of children from Russia and engaging in negotiations in Moscow and China. He is considered by many betting providers to be a strong candidate.
Though,English acknowledges a potential obstacle for Zuppi: “But Zuppi has a problem,” says English,”he is the chairman of the Italian bishops’ conference and the base rebelled against his final document. Cardinals from abroad should now think: If Zusppi does not have his own shop under control, how should he be Pope?” The upcoming conclave promises to be closely watched, with the possibility of a relatively young, European Pope emerging.
