Polish children’s retail chain Smyk has entered the Slovak market, opening its first physical store in the Bory Mall shopping center in Bratislava. The expansion comes as the Slovak retailer Dráčik closes several of its locations, including a store in the Avion shopping center that is being replaced by the Polish company.
Smyk specializes in a comprehensive range of equipment for children from birth through school age. The company’s product offering includes strollers, children’s clothing, school bags, car seats, various types of toys and accessories for children’s rooms.
The retailer provides a mix of globally recognized brands and its own proprietary labels. Customers can find products from brands such as Lego, Barbie, Hasbro, Mattel, and Fisher-Price. Smyk sells its own products under the Cool Club brand, which focuses on clothing, footwear, and accessories, and the Smiki brand, which covers toys and other children’s needs.
Regional Expansion and Market Presence
Smyk originated in Poland, where it established itself as a leader in the sale of children’s goods. Prior to its entry into Slovakia, the company had already expanded its operations across the region, operating in Romania and Ukraine.
As of July 11, 2025, the company operated 241 physical stores in Poland, alongside an e-commerce platform. Its presence in Romania and Ukraine included an additional 30 stores.
The company’s entry into Slovakia was first signaled in February 2025. Following the opening of the first branch at Bory Mall in Bratislava, the company plans to open further branches in other Slovak cities.
Impact on Slovak Retailers
The arrival of Smyk is expected to create significant competition for established Slovak children’s retail chains, specifically Dráčik and Altoys. Industry reports indicate that Smyk’s extensive product range and strong logistical infrastructure make it a formidable competitor in the local market.
The market shift is already evident through the closure of existing stores. Reports from July 2025 highlight that Dráčik is closing stores, with the location in the Avion shopping center being specifically noted as being taken over by the incoming foreign competitor.
Smyk aims to attract Slovak consumers by offering a one-stop-shop experience for all children’s needs. This strategy involves combining a wide variety of third-party international brands with their own specialized lines, such as the seasonal collections offered by Cool Club.
The product categories available at the new locations include:
- Children’s clothing for all age categories, including seasonal collections from Cool Club.
- Equipment for infants, including strollers, car seats, and baby carriers.
- Toys ranging from educational and interactive sets to creative kits, figures, dolls, and Smiki brand building sets.
- Board games, books, school supplies, and nursery furniture.
- Childcare and hygiene products.
The entry of the Polish chain is described as a significant impulse for the Slovak retail sector specializing in children’s goods, introducing new purchasing options for consumers while pressuring domestic players to adapt to the increased competition.
