Early Life and Hollywood Childhood
born Nov.26, 1948, Mason was the eldest daughter of English actors James and Pamela Mason. she was named after Portland Hoffa, the wife of comedian Fred Allen, a friend of James Mason.
Mason’s early life was marked by the extravagance of Hollywood. Reports from the time described a childhood of luxury,though the family sometimes disputed the extent of these claims. One account noted that by age 9, she had her own mink coat and diamonds.
Her entry into the public eye was somewhat tumultuous, beginning with an incident where her father confronted a photographer at her christening. She attended school with daily drop-offs in a Rolls-Royce and afternoon pickups in a white Cadillac.
James Mason reportedly introduced his daughter to tobacco at the age of 3, hoping it would deter her from smoking later in life. Despite the unusual upbringing, a London journalist who interviewed her in 1966 described her as “surprisingly intact, something shy and modest.” In 1963, the family relocated to Switzerland.
Acting Career
Mason’s acting career began early. She appeared in numerous television programs and starred in a short film titled “The child” at age 4. In 1956, she played Gregory Peck’s daughter in the film ”The Man in the grey Flannel Suit.” she continued to appear in various films and television series.
In 1962,at age 13,Mason faced a contractual dispute with Lyl Productions. She was initially cast as “Marnie” in “The New Loretta young Show” but was later dismissed for leaving the set during lunch and missing rehearsals. The ensuing legal battle between the Mason family and Lyl Productions resulted in the court ruling in favor of the Masons.
One of her more notable roles was as Georgina in “The Grate St Trinian’s Train Robbery” in 1966. Following her final film role in “Sebastian” (1968), she pursued writng, following in her mother’s footsteps.
According to her husband, Mason was working on a book about her father at the time of her death.
Later Life and Family Matters
Following James Mason’s death in 1984 and his marriage to his second wife,Clarissa Kaye in 1971,Portland Mason and her brother became involved in a legal dispute with their stepmother over their father’s will and his cremated remains. They eventually obtained their father’s ashes in 1999.
Shortly after scattering her father’s ashes in Vevey, switzerland, in November 2000, Portland Mason suffered a stroke.
Death and survivors
Portland Mason died after a long illness. She is survived by her husband,Rob Schuyler.
