Porter Hails Lions ‘Dad’ as Ireland Trio Set to Star in Test Opener
Andrew Porter has lauded veteran teammate Alun Wyn Jones as the “dad of the squad” as the British & Irish Lions prepare to face Australia. Porter, who will start at loosehead prop in Saturday’s first Test, revealed jones was the first to congratulate him on his inclusion and even presented him with his cap.”He’s an remarkable player, and it’s been great to build a friendship as well as learn from him,” Porter said. “He’s one of the best in the business so it’s great being able to become closer as mates and learn from each other along the way.”
Jones, a record-breaking lock and captain, has been a guiding force throughout the tour, and Porter’s comments highlight the immense respect he commands within the Lions camp. “He was the first one to congratulate me yesterday and sure he handed out my cap to me last week instead of my dad,” Porter added. “So he’s the dad of the squad. He’s a great fella and a great player.”
All-Leinster Front Row Ready to Roar
Porter will pack down alongside fellow Leinster and Ireland front-rowers Dan Sheehan and Tadhg Furlong, a trio that has dominated at club and international level. The opportunity to share the Test stage with his familiar teammates is a significant moment for the powerful prop.
“I’m delighted to be able to do it alongside them,” Porter expressed. “I just need to be on top of my game because they’ve had great tours so far so I just need to be able to make them look good.”
A Dream Come True for Porter
The journey to a Lions Test start has been a dream realised for Porter, who has impressed throughout the tour with his relentless work rate and scrummaging power.
“It’s a dream come true, firstly just being a part of this squad and then hearing your name in the Test team last week was incredible,” he reflected. “Hearing my name in the starting line-up for this week is another dream ticked off again.”
Porter is brimming with anticipation for the challenge ahead, eager to contribute to the Lions’ success. “I’m just incredibly excited for the opportunity to go out there and play for this team and play with these lads who we’ve created such great connection with over the last few weeks. It’s incredibly exciting and looking forward to ripping into it.”
