Portland Theater Crew Seeks Unionization for Better Wages
Portland Stagehands Seek Unionization, Citing Stagnant Wages
PORTLAND, Maine – A group of 35 stagehands and technicians employed by the State Theater and Thompson’s Point are taking steps to unionize, citing stagnant wages that are failing to keep pace with the rising cost of living.
Devon Medeiros, business agent for the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 114, said the production crew is seeking union portrayal to address their concerns.
“Essentially, their wages haven’t kept up with inflation,” Medeiros explained. “Which is effectively a pay decrease just to keep their job.”
The employees are hoping that Crobo LLC, the parent company that operates the popular Portland concert venues, will voluntarily recognize the union. If not, they plan to hold a vote to formally establish union representation.
As of press time, Crobo LLC had not responded to a request for comment.
