“We’ve seen those chances now turn into goals and at a good rate,” head coach Cameron Knowles said. “What we need to do is get back to tightening up the defending.”

First-Half Deficit and Defensive Struggles

Portland established a commanding lead early in the fixture, capitalizing on defensive errors and transition opportunities. In the 20th minute, Portland doubled its advantage through an own goal. Janssen added his second goal of the night in the 26th minute, tapping in a cross from David Da Costa to make it 3-0.

Minnesota’s Second-Half Comeback Falls Short

The Loons responded before halftime to narrow the deficit. Marcus Caldeira scored in the 32nd minute off a through ball from Joaquín Pereyra, extending his scoring streak to three consecutive matches. Anthony Markanich added a second goal in the 38th minute, firing into the back of the net after Kelvin Yeboah carried the ball into the penalty area following a Portland turnover. Minnesota completed the comeback in the 50th minute when Caldeira capitalized on another defensive mistake, pushing a loose ball over the goal line to level the match at 3-3. However, Portland reclaimed the lead five minutes later when Janssen completed his hat trick in the 55th minute. Kristoffer Velde extended the Timbers’ advantage to 5-3 in the 71st minute with a shot from the left side of the penalty area. Tomás Chancalay scored for Minnesota in the 92nd minute off a long cross from Carlos Harvey, but the late tally was not enough to overcome the deficit.

Standings and Upcoming Schedule

With the victory, Portland improved to 9-10-4 with 31 points in the Western Conference standings, moving ahead of Minnesota United, which sits at 29 points. Knowles noted that the team’s aggressive pressing style can leave the backline exposed when timing lapses occur. Minnesota United returns home to host FC Dallas on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2026, at 7:30 p.m.
