A 15-year-old student at Benson Polytechnic High School in Northeast Portland is in critical condition after drinking a toxic mixture of chemicals he brought from home in the school cafeteria on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. The incident prompted an emergency evacuation of the campus and a large response from police and fire officials.

Portland Fire & Rescue and medical crews arrived at the Northeast Portland campus just after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to local reports. Responding personnel found the 15-year-old boy passed out and in distress after he ingested the chemical mixture and spilled some of it on the cafeteria floor, as detailed by Portland Police Bureau spokesperson Mike Benner.

School staff and emergency responders provided immediate aid to the student. Benner commended Benson staff, including the school nurse, for their quick action in performing CPR and other lifesaving measures before the boy was transported to a hospital.

Emergency Response and Campus Evacuation

Emergency crews quickly contained the spill to a single room within minutes of their arrival. To allow emergency responders to evaluate the building and identify the unknown substances, officials ordered a full evacuation of Benson Polytechnic High School.

Portland Fire & Rescue evaluated up to 200 students and staff members on nearby athletic fields. Officials confirmed that no other individuals were injured or sickened during the incident.

Hazardous materials teams worked at the scene to identify the chemical mixture, while the Metropolitan Explosive Disposal Unit was deployed as a precaution. Authorities advised anyone who was nearby and experienced symptoms such as nausea, headaches, or a sore throat to remove contaminated clothing, take a shower, and get fresh air.

Joint Investigation Underway

The Portland Police Bureau, Portland Fire & Rescue, and Portland Public Schools launched a joint investigation into the morning events. Homicide detectives responded to the school to determine whether there is any potential criminal nexus to the incident.

Investigators also examined a social media post made by the student prior to the incident. Benner stated that police located the post and incorporated it into the active investigation.

Portland Public Schools superintendent Kimberlee Armstrong described the event as stressful, scary, and devastating. School officials announced that classes and after-school activities at Benson High School were canceled through Wednesday, with normal operations scheduled to resume on Thursday, September 10, 2026.

Police urged anyone with information regarding the incident to contact investigators via email at crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov.
