Portobello, HBO Max’s first italian original series, premieres February 20 and recounts the true story of Enzo Tortora, a popular television personality wrongly accused of ties to the Mafia.The six-part drama is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Marco Bellocchio.
The Story of Enzo Tortora
Enzo Tortora was a highly regarded Italian television host known for his investigative journalism and popular game shows. In 1987, he was arrested and accused of being a Mafioso, a charge that shocked the nation. Tortora maintained his innocence throughout the ordeal, claiming the accusations were fabricated by political rivals and elements within the justice system.
The case against Tortora was largely built on the testimony of a pentito (informant) named Francesco Di Carlo, who later recanted key parts of his testimony. Despite this, Tortora spent months in prison before being acquitted in 1989. He died of a heart attack in 1994, still fighting to clear his name completely.
Marco Bellocchio and the Series
Marco Bellocchio,a prominent figure in Italian cinema since the 1960s,directed Portobello.Bellocchio is known for his politically charged and frequently enough controversial films, including Good Morning, Night (2003), which examined the kidnapping of Aldo Moro by the Red Brigades. His involvement lends significant weight and artistic credibility to the series.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bellocchio approached the project with a desire to explore the complexities of the Italian justice system and the power of media manipulation.
HBO Max’s Expansion into Italian Originals
Portobello represents HBO Max’s first foray into Italian original programming. This move is part of a broader strategy by warner Bros. Finding to expand its international content offerings. In December 2023, The Hollywood Reporter reported on the company’s efforts to leverage local talent and stories to attract subscribers in key markets.
The series follows the launch of HBO Max in Italy in November 2023, offering a combined streaming service with Discovery+ content.
