Portuguese Prime Minister Luís montenegro secured a crucial victory Wednesday, gaining parliamentary approval for his government program. This achievement fulfills a key promise from his electoral campaign, which centered on the theme of enabling his administration to govern effectively.
The vote took place in a parliament where right-leaning parties hold a majority.Despite internal divisions following recent electoral setbacks, the Socialist Party joined the right-wing Chega party and the Liberal Initiative in supporting Montenegro’s program. A rejection motion put forth by the Portuguese Communist Party, criticizing the program as reminiscent of austerity measures, failed to gain traction.
Montenegro hailed the vote as a legitimization of his government and appealed for cooperation from the parliament to implement future policies. His Democratic Alliance coalition holds 91 seats,short of the 116 needed for an absolute majority. This necessitates building consensus with other parties to pass budgets and make key appointments.
Chega leader André Ventura, while supporting the program, cautioned that his party would not act as a mere “crutch” for the government, positioning Chega as an alternative to the Democratic Alliance.
