Posy sterling, star of the upcoming film ”Lollipop,” prepared for her role as a steadfast mother fighting to regain custody of her children by immersing herself in ice baths each morning before filming. The film, centered on women impacted by the criminal justice system, demanded a heavy emotional toll, but Sterling found the ice baths provided a sense of lightness.
Sterling said she found the experience “euphoric,” leading her driver to bring extra ice as part of her routine. Her dedication to the role reflects her deep connection to the story and the character of Molly.
To prepare for the role, Sterling spoke with a woman who had fought to regain custody of her children. the woman shared visceral details of her experiences, which Sterling drew upon to portray Molly’s emotional journey. In one of the film’s most poignant scenes, Molly breaks down in a social services building, unleashing a raw, animalistic cry of pain.
Born in Manchester in 1992, Sterling spent her childhood in north London and Leicestershire. As one of eight siblings, she developed a keen interest in observing and understanding human behavior, an interest that would later inform her acting.
Sterling describes herself as “passionate” and “rebellious” during her school years. Performing became an outlet, and she excelled as a singer, often directing impromptu shows. She gained acceptance to Italia Conti drama school before joining Clean Break,an organization offering support to women affected by the criminal justice system.
Sterling declined to discuss the circumstances that led her to Clean Break but noted that the organization provided a “second chance for a lot of women.” Initially hesitant about acting, she found the program offered an prospect to transform pain into something meaningful.
Clean Break, sterling said, nurtured her as a person, teaching her how to navigate in and out of character. She graduated from Italia Conti in 2016, equipped with life experience and acting skills. Her performance in “Lollipop” is both authentic and skillfully crafted.

Zawe Ashton, who mentored Sterling through Clean Break, praised her performance in “Lollipop” as “full of primal feeling and nuance.”
In addition to acting, Sterling is a talented vocalist. Her singing caught the attention of Jane Winehouse, who invited her to participate in the Amy’s Yard outreach program. This experience, Sterling said, reconnected her to herself.
