Pothole Season: Providence Braces After 2026 Blizzard | Wheeler Cowperthwaite

Pothole Season Arrives in Rhode Island Following Blizzard

Providence, RI – Following the Blizzard of 2026, Rhode Island drivers are now facing a new challenge: a surge in potholes. The freeze-thaw cycle, a common occurrence in New England winters, is to blame for the deteriorating road conditions, with Providence’s West End particularly affected, according to reports.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) explains that water seeps into existing cracks in the pavement, freezes, and expands. This expansion weakens the road surface, and then traffic further breaks it apart, creating and exacerbating potholes. The problem typically peaks during this time of year, as temperatures fluctuate.

While RIDOT is responsible for state-maintained roads, cities and towns handle maintenance on local streets. In Providence, Mayor Brett Smiley announced that crews are now able to make more lasting repairs, as asphalt plants have reopened following the winter season. “That has started just in the last 48 hours, but it will be weeks before these potholes are filled,” Smiley said, according to a report from NBC 10 News.

RIDOT crews have been actively patching potholes “the whole season long, 24/7,” stated Kyle Gagnon, RIDOT’s chief project manager. Despite these ongoing efforts, the department acknowledges that the thawing weather continues to create new potholes at a rapid pace.

The recent blizzard, which dumped significant amounts of snow on the region in February, has undoubtedly contributed to the severity of this year’s pothole season. Images and videos circulating online, including one shared on Facebook by Natwxdesk, showcase the extent of the damage to roads in and around Providence.

The impact of potholes extends beyond mere inconvenience. Auto experts warn that hitting potholes can lead to costly vehicle repairs. Drivers are experiencing the frustration firsthand, often encountering potholes unexpectedly and sustaining damage to their vehicles.

The city of Providence employed industrial snowblowers to expedite snow removal following the blizzard, a measure intended to mitigate the impact of the winter weather. However, the subsequent freeze-thaw cycle has proven to be a significant factor in the emergence of potholes.

The situation is not unique to Providence. Pothole season is impacting roads throughout Rhode Island, as the state grapples with the aftermath of a harsh winter. RIDOT and local municipalities are working to address the issue, but drivers are advised to exercise caution and be prepared for potentially rough road conditions for the foreseeable future.

Wheeler Cowperthwaite of The Providence Journal has been documenting the impact of the blizzard and its aftermath, including the resulting pothole situation, providing visual evidence of the challenges faced by residents, and commuters.
