Table of Contents
Sea Island, Georgia – Carson Schmid fired a second consecutive round of 65 to take the lead at 17 under par at The RSM Classic on Friday. He edged ahead of co-leaders Nick Dunlap and Sami Valimaki, who are one stroke behind.
Schmid, a 10-time top-10 finisher, navigated a bogey-free round, adding two birdies to his remarkable total. “I played really well, got a little lucky, but that’s part of it,” Schmid said after his round.
Dunlap and Valimaki, who both shot 11-under-par 61s in the first round, remained in contention with matching 67s on Friday. Dunlap’s day included a costly double bogey on the par-4 No. 7 after a penalty. He explained, “I just hit it right, my only bad swing off the tee all week. This place gives you a lot of room off the tee but if you do miss it, then you’re going to pay the price for it.”
Valimaki balanced seven birdies with a pair of bogeys. Chad Ramey is in fourth place at 15 under, also carding a bogey-free 65 with seven birdies. France’s Victor Perez and Griffin, who opened with an eagle, are tied for fifth at 14 under, both also shooting 65s.
