Prabowo Orders Halt on New Toll Road Projects
Indonesia Pauses New Toll road Projects Amid Budget Review
Jakarta – In a move aimed at reassessing national spending priorities, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has ordered a temporary halt to new infrastructure projects, including toll roads. The decision, announced by Badan Pengatur Jalan Tol (BPJT) member Sony Sulaksono Wibowo, will see the postponement of projects that haven’t yet begun construction.
“There was an instruction from President Prabowo to stop several large projects.toll roads are also affected, but the projects that will be held are those that haven’t started yet,” Wibowo explained during a media gathering hosted by ASTRA Infra Group in Jakarta.
While new projects are on hold, Wibowo emphasized that ongoing construction and those in the feasibility study and bidding phases will continue as planned.
“Toll roads related to construction, those that have already started feasibility studies and bidding, will continue. This details is also for the media, because there are concerns that all toll roads will stop. No, we will continue those that have contracts,” he assured.
Wibowo cited the Puncak Toll Road and the Kulonprogo-Cilacap toll road as examples of projects that will be delayed until at least 2025. However, projects like the Gilimanuk-Mengwi Toll Road and the Gedebage-Tasikmalaya-Cilacap (Getaci) Toll road, which are already in the bidding process, will proceed.
The decision to pause new toll road projects comes as the government reviews its budget for 2025. Wibowo indicated that projects could resume if private investors express strong interest.
“Toll roads that are newly entering the study phase will be held for now, unless there are private investors who want to participate. If there are, please go ahead. But if it’s solicited from the government, we’ll hold it for now,” he said.
Wibowo confirmed that there is private sector interest in the Puncak Toll Road, but feasibility studies are still underway.
This pause in new toll road construction reflects the Indonesian government’s focus on fiscal prudence and careful allocation of resources.
