Prabowo Briefs Jokowi on Landmark Indonesia-EU Economic Partnership Agreement

Jakarta, Indonesia – President Prabowo Subianto provided a complete update to his predecessor, Joko Widodo, on the prosperous conclusion of the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA). The briefing took place at President WidodoS residence in Solo City, Central Java, underscoring the importance of this milestone in Indonesia’s economic diplomacy.
president Prabowo emphasized that president Widodo possesses a deep understanding of the intricate and protracted negotiations that led to the IEU-CEPA. The talks, which commenced in 2016 during President Widodo’s first term, spanned several years, navigating complex global economic landscapes.
“He (Jokowi) knows how arduous it was to negotiate the agreement,” President Prabowo stated to reporters following the meeting. “Current global uncertainty eventually prompted Indonesia and the European Union to fast-track the talks, and thank God, we did it.” This sentiment highlights the collaborative spirit and shared vision that underpinned the agreement’s eventual success.
Diplomatic Acclaim and High-Level Engagements
During his recent visit to Brussels, Belgium, President Prabowo shared that he received exceptionally warm and honorable treatment from European leaders. This included meetings with the President of the European Commission,Ursula von der Leyen,and the President of the European Council,Antonio Costa,on a Sunday – a day typically reserved for rest in Western cultures.
“Indonesia received very honorable treatment when the president of the European Commission and the president of the european Council took their time to meet me on a Sunday, which is typically strictly a day off in the West,” President Prabowo remarked.
The formal proclamation of the IEU-CEPA negotiations’ conclusion was made by President Prabowo and President von der Leyen at the EU Headquarters in Brussels. The agreement is slated for formal signing in the Belgian capital in September 2025, marking a new era of economic cooperation.
A Royal Audience in Brussels
Adding to the diplomatic successes of his European tour, President Prabowo also held a private meeting with King Philippe of Belgium. The President noted the King’s personal commitment to the engagement, highlighting that His Majesty returned to Brussels specifically to meet with him.
“I was received by the King on Sunday afternoon at his palace in Brussels.Note that the monarch was initially away from Brussels, but he was willing to return to meet me,” President Prabowo shared, underscoring the high regard in which Indonesia is held.
Presidential Visit and Subsequent Engagements
President prabowo arrived at President Widodo’s residence in Solo at approximately 6 p.m. local time, where he was warmly welcomed by the former president and his wife, Iriana. Accompanied by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, the President spent about an hour in discussion with his predecessor.
Following the meeting, President Prabowo proceeded to attend a congress of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) in the city, demonstrating his continued engagement with domestic political affairs.
