West Bandung, Indonesia – President Prabowo Subianto underscored the importance of remembering Indonesia’s struggle for independence adn strengthening national defense during a ceremony marking the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI)’s structural expansion. Held at the Education and Training Center of the Special Force Command (Kopassus) in West Bandung District, West Java, on Sunday, the event highlighted both the nation’s past sacrifices and its commitment to future security.

Remembering the Past, Securing the Future

Addressing young soldiers, President Prabowo emphasized the necessity of understanding the hardships endured by previous generations. “To young soldiers standing in front of me, don’t ever forget our history – how our ancestors, grandparents, and parents were once oppressed and enslaved by colonial powers. Remember that they were treated worse than animals,” he stated.

This call to remembrance isn’t merely a past lesson, but a foundational element for understanding the value of Indonesia’s hard-won sovereignty. Prabowo highlighted past instances of exploitation, noting, “We have seen our wealth stolen and our kin turned against one another.” He stressed that a strong defense force is paramount to preventing such injustices from recurring.

Expanding TNI Capabilities and leadership

The ceremony marked a significant expansion of the TNI’s structure, demonstrating a proactive approach to bolstering national security. President Prabowo inaugurated General Tandyo Budi Revita as the TNI Deputy Commander – a position that had remained vacant for 25 years – signifying a renewed focus on strategic leadership within the armed forces.Further solidifying this commitment, the President launched a series of new military units:

Six new Indonesian Army (TNI-AD) regional commands.
Fourteen new Indonesian navy (TNI-AL) regional commands.
Three new Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) regional commands.

These expansions are designed to enhance the TNI’s ability to safeguard Indonesia’s vast archipelago, protect its territorial integrity, and secure its abundant natural resources. Prabowo affirmed that a powerful defense force is not merely desirable, but essential for maintaining independence and sovereignty.

Commitment to the Constitution and the Indonesian People

President Prabowo reaffirmed his dedication to upholding the 1945 Constitution and serving the Indonesian people to the best of his ability. He praised the young soldiers for their spirit, discipline, and willingness to sacrifice for the nation, stating, “Being a soldier is an honor, but this honor comes with a call of duty – of sacrifice. I am proud of you all, proud of your willingness to sacrifice.”

This sentiment underscores the deep respect Prabowo holds for the TNI and its vital role in safeguarding Indonesia’s future. The expansion and modernization efforts are a direct reflection of this commitment, ensuring that the TNI remains a capable and respected force in the region.
