Prabowo Warns of Backlash as Indonesia Intensifies Anti-Corruption Efforts

Jakarta – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto warned on Saturday that every attempt to eradicate corruption within the government is met with fierce resistance from entrenched interests, signaling a potentially turbulent path forward in his administration’s anti-graft campaign. Speaking at the inauguration of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) leadership for the 2025-2030 term at Jakarta’s Istiqlal Mosque, Prabowo described those opposing reform as “gangs of plunderers” who actively seek to create societal unrest, and division.

“Every time we try to eradicate corruption, every time we try to uphold justice, these looter groups strike back,” Prabowo said, characterizing the opposition as a coordinated effort to protect illicit gains. He accused these groups of attempting to “stir chaos and pit us against one another,” with the ultimate goal of preventing the establishment of a clean and accountable government.

The President’s remarks come as Indonesia continues to grapple with systemic corruption, a long-standing issue that undermines economic growth, erodes public trust, and exacerbates poverty. Prabowo has repeatedly vowed to tackle corruption head-on, introducing initiatives like “greednomics” – a term he uses to describe exploitative business practices – and pledging to crack down on monopolies, price-fixing, and the hoarding of subsidized goods.

Prabowo acknowledged the scale of the challenge, stating that the anti-corruption drive is not an easy task and will inevitably face resistance. “I was sworn in before the people to uphold the law,” he asserted. “I will not hesitate, and I will not step back even an inch.”

The President emphasized the need for a unified national response, calling on all segments of Indonesian society – including religious scholars and community leaders – to join the fight against corruption. “Let us stand together,” he urged. “We must safeguard this republic, protect the nation’s wealth, and have the courage to eradicate corruption from Indonesian soil.”

Prabowo highlighted the stark contrast between Indonesia’s abundant natural and economic resources and the widespread poverty experienced by many of its citizens, attributing this disparity to decades of corrupt practices that have systematically drained state assets. He believes that addressing this imbalance is central to his administration’s agenda.

The President expressed gratitude for the support of the Indonesian Ulema Council, stating that backing from religious leaders has strengthened his resolve. “Thank you to MUI for giving me a surge of courage. When scholars and leaders stand united, I am confident justice can be upheld across Indonesia,” he said.

Prabowo’s warning of resistance echoes concerns raised by anti-corruption activists who have long pointed to the coordinated efforts of vested interests to obstruct reform. His administration faces a significant test in navigating these challenges and delivering on its promise of a cleaner, more accountable government. The President’s firm stance, however, signals a determination to confront these obstacles despite the anticipated backlash.
