As part of National Tourism Week, the Government of Canada announced an investment of more than CAD 1.9 million to support eight tourism projects across Alberta, aimed at boosting the province’s visitor economy through enhanced cultural and heritage experiences, expanded accommodation offerings and improved attractions.

The funding, channeled through Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan) under the Tourism Growth Program, was unveiled by Minister Eleanor Olszewski on April 22, 2026, in Edmonton, Alberta.

The initiative targets Indigenous-led cultural experiences, rural accommodation expansions, and heritage-site upgrades designed to attract visitors beyond the peak summer season and address seasonal volatility in Alberta’s tourism sector.

PrairiesCan estimates the funded projects will support more than 50 jobs and stimulate additional private investment once completed, helping to create year-round employment opportunities in communities across the province.

Examples of supported initiatives include Dark-Sky viewing lodges near Abraham Lake and Métis cultural tours in central Alberta, which aim to diversify tourism offerings and draw international and domestic travelers during off-peak periods.

The investment aligns with broader efforts to prepare Alberta for increased visitor demand during major events such as FIFA 2026, while also supporting local businesses, not-for-profits, and Indigenous entrepreneurs in strengthening their tourism offerings.

Officials noted that enhanced rural infrastructure from the funding could ease pressure on hotel capacity in gateway cities during business conferences and energy-sector peaks, facilitating more predictable corporate travel rates.

Authentic Indigenous tourism products supported by the initiative are also highlighted as valuable components of expatriate-family integration packages, offering newcomers deeper connections to Canada’s cultural landscape.

While the funding addresses immediate needs for diversification and job preservation, visitors planning to access these new experiences will still need to meet Canada’s entry requirements, including electronic travel authorizations (eTAs) or visas depending on their country of origin.

The announcement was made during National Tourism Week, underscoring the federal government’s commitment to growing regional economies through targeted investments in tourism infrastructure and cultural experiences.
