JAKARTA – The Governor of Jakarta has issued a strong warning to PT Pelindo and other operators at Tanjung Priok Port following days of severe traffic congestion that has impacted roads throughout the city, including tollways.
The governor, speaking Saturday at Jakarta City Hall, stated that while Pelindo has issued an apology, further action is required. “I have ordered the Transportation Department to promptly complete its assessment and issue the strongest possible warning to Tanjung Priok, Pelindo, and all operators in Tanjung Priok. This must not happen again,” he said, as reported by detikcom.
The governor also apologized to Jakarta residents affected by the traffic gridlock. “I apologize for the incident that occurred in Tanjung Priok, the unusual traffic jams on the toll roads, which have lasted until today,” he stated.
The governor has coordinated with the Head of the jakarta Transportation Department, syafrin Liputo,to investigate the root cause of the congestion. Preliminary findings indicate a meaningful imbalance between port capacity and the volume of truck traffic.
“The main cause is that the capacity is only 2,500 [trucks], but in these three days, they were forced to process 7,000 trucks per hour,” the governor explained. “The Jakarta government is bearing the brunt of this extraordinary incident. Therefore, I have instructed City Hall officials to ensure this does not happen again and to deny any similar requests in the future.”
Unscheduled Ship Arrivals Blamed for Port Congestion
Pelindo, in a prior press conference, attributed the widespread traffic jams to the unscheduled arrival of three vessels. Drajat Sulistyo, Regional Executive Director 2 of PT Pelindo, stated that the ships were loading and unloading outside of their designated schedules.
“This increase in volume is concentrated in one terminal, NPCT 1, due to the arrival of ships that were originally scheduled to arrive one week ago,” Sulistyo said Friday at the Tanjung Priok KSOP Office in North Jakarta.
Sulistyo identified the ships as the MSC adu V, Ever Balmy, and Venus Starship. “These three ships were indeed scheduled for the previous week, while another was due to arrive 24 hours prior,” he explained.
According to Sulistyo, the off-schedule docking of these vessels considerably increased the volume of loading and unloading at the NPCT 1 terminal, leading to the congestion.
“The impact of ships not adhering to their designated time slots, due to this container ship window, adds to the volume at times when it is not supposed to,” Sulistyo said.
