Sharmistha Mukherjee, daughter of former President Pranab Mukherjee, has launched a scathing critique of the Congress party, alleging a “sad state of affairs” and calling for “serious introspection.” In a recent interview, Mukherjee expressed her disappointment over the party’s lack of response to her father’s passing in 2020.

“the Congress has to answer for this,” Mukherjee stated. “I do not know whether it was intentional or sheer negligence. What are the conventions in such a grand old party?” She pointed out that the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party’s highest decision-making body, did not convene a meeting to offer condolences.

Mukherjee’s criticism extends beyond this specific incident. She highlighted what she perceives as a broader issue within the Congress, stating, “If there is this loss of institutional memory, if Rahul Gandhi and the people around him do not know how the Congress acted in these earlier situations, that itself is a serious and sad state of affairs within the Congress.”

she further alleged that party workers feel alienated from the top leadership due to a lack of “ideology” among Congress leaders.

“The kind of language that was used on me and one of the tallest leaders like my father shows that there is a real rot in the Congress,” she said, referring to what she described as relentless trolling by the party’s social media handles over issues she raised.

Mukherjee’s comments come amidst a controversy surrounding the demand for a memorial for former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. While she declined to comment directly on the memorial row, as she is no longer a member of the party, she expressed her belief that Singh “thoroughly deserves” the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.

“I think the demand to have a memorial for Manmohan Singh is absolutely justified,” Mukherjee said. “He was the architect of economic reforms in India, he was the father of India’s growth story, he was a two-time prime minister.”

Mukherjee’s public criticism adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing internal challenges facing the Congress party.

A family Divided: Inside the Mukherjee fallout

Maya: Hey Liam, did you see that interview with Sharmistha mukherjee? It was pretty explosive.Liam: No, I missed it. Who is she again?

Maya: She’s the daughter of former President Pranab Mukherjee. In the interview, she was pretty critical of the Congress party.

Liam: wow, critical of her own father’s party? I’m surprised. What did she say?

Maya: She was really disappointed that the Congress Working Committee didn’t even convene a meeting to offer condolences when her father passed away in 2020. She said it showed a lack of “institutional memory.”

Liam: That’s pretty harsh. What else did she say?

Maya: She basically said the party lacks ideology and direction. She feels that party workers are alienated and that the leadership, especially Rahul Gandhi, doesn’t understand the party’s history and values.

Liam: So,she’s really calling them out on their leadership?

Maya: absolutely.she even mentioned the trolling she received from the party’s social media handles when she raised these concerns. She said it showed a “real rot” within the Congress.Liam: That’s pretty damning. Any response from the Congress party?

Maya: Not publicly, at least. But her comments certainly add fuel to the fire surrounding the Congress right now.

Sharmistha Mukherjee

Sharmistha Mukherjee, daughter of former President Pranab Mukherjee, has delivered a scathing critique of the Indian National Congress party, calling for “serious introspection” and lamenting the party’s lack of response to her father’s passing in 2020.

In a recent interview, Ms. mukherjee expressed her profound disappointment at the party’s perceived indifference towards her father’s legacy.

“The Congress has to answer for this,” she stated forcefully. “I do not know whether it was intentional or sheer negligence. What are the conventions in such a grand old party?” she questioned, highlighting a perceived lack of protocol and institutional memory.

Ms. Mukherjee’s criticism extends beyond the personal slight. She has also voiced concerns about the Congress party’s wider failings, including a lack of clear ideology and direction. These comments come at a time when the Congress is grappling with internal divisions and struggling to solidify its position against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

It remains to be seen how the Congress party will respond to Ms. Mukherjee’s critique. Her words, however, have undoubtedly reignited a debate about the future direction of India’s oldest political party.
