Occitanie accounts for nearly a third of all locally acquired chikungunya cases identified across mainland France, according to public health figures. Santé publique France reported on October 1, 2026, that the region recorded 39 indigenous infections out of a national total of 125 cases through September 29, 2026.

Thirty Confirmed Cases Identified in Prayssac

The localized outbreak centers heavily on the commune of Prayssac in the Lot department, which alone accounts for 30 confirmed cases. The first infection in the municipality was identified on August 18, 2026, in a resident who had not traveled outside mainland France recently. Laboratory confirmation came on August 24, 2026, from the National Reference Center for Arboviruses after symptoms began on August 10, 2026.

A door-to-door screening campaign conducted the following day failed to uncover either the index case or any additional suspected local infections. However, health authorities recorded a sharp escalation starting September 10, 2026, when multiple new suspected cases emerged. The most recent patient identified in the commune developed symptoms on September 21, 2026.

Health Authorities Examine Village Festival Link

Santé publique France indicated that the surge in transmissions could be linked to the Prayssac village festival held at the end of August. The gathering took place outside the geographical perimeter that had received initial vector control treatments. Investigators noted that infected mosquitoes may have been active at the event.

To curb further spread, response teams carried out four vector control treatments on August 23, August 27, September 17, and September 22, 2026. Public health officials also expanded active case-finding operations, alerted local healthcare practitioners, and distributed health advisories to area residents.

Earlier Tarn and Gard Outbreaks Recorded Across Occitanie

Beyond the primary cluster in the Lot department, Occitanie encompasses two smaller regional episodes of local transmission. Saint-Amans-Soult in the Tarn department recorded eight indigenous cases with onset dates spanning July 9 to July 21, 2026, an episode now officially closed. Meanwhile, a single case was identified in Aigues-Mortes in the Gard department with onset of signs on September 14, 2026.

In addition to the 39 local infections, regional health monitors registered 18 imported cases of chikungunya among Occitanie residents between May 1 and September 29, 2026. These travel-associated infections are tracked separately from the domestic transmission totals used for national comparisons.

Active Monitoring Continues Across Open Clusters

Nationwide, Santé publique France documented 19 separate episodes of local transmission, with individual clusters ranging from one to 30 cases. The 30 infections confirmed in Prayssac represent the largest single episode recorded in the national bulletin.

Surveillance remains active around all open epidemiological clusters. Health protocols dictate that an outbreak area cannot be declared officially closed until 45 days pass without recording a single new local infection.
